Ministry of Local Government hosts Effective Financial Management training for employees of the Municipal department


The Municipal Division of the Ministry of Local Government & Regional Development today hosted a one-day training session for staff of the different Municipalities across the country. The session was held at the Ministry’s Boardroom in Kingston, Georgetown.

The training focused on promoting effective financial management and targeted Town Clerks, Municipal Treasurers and Senior Finance Clerks. The objective of the training was to ensure Municipalities prepare their Annual Estimates of Revenue and Expenditures in conformity with the standerised format ant to ensure Municipal financial management.

Five key areas were looked at, these areas are Finiancial Management, Control and Procurement, Municipal Chart of Accounts, Monthly Financial Report, Budget process and Review and Annual Financial Statement. The sessions were conducted by Mr. B. Nipan, MS, Nandranie Harrichan PMSO, MR. Fabion Jerrick MSO and Mr. Rajkumar Lakeram.

Also present at the event was Minister within the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Norman Whittaker and Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms. Abena Moore.

Minister Whittaker during his address highlighted that training is an essential part of capacity building. He said “training has to be a continual process, it enhances the quality of work.” He also said that it is important to look at these areas, since it is the use of tax payers’ money and there is need for adequate use of this revenue.

This is an effort by the Ministry to ensure effective use of the tax payer’s revenue while at the same time provide quality service to the Guyanese citizens and enhancing the knowledge of the staff of the Municipal divisions across the county.
